Set in modern Birmingham, “Land Gold Women” revolves around a small British Asian family caught between their traditional past and the tumultuous, faction-driven present. Nazir Ali Khan, a soft-spoken, 45-year-old professor of History at a University in Birmingham, emigrated from India in the 1980′s. He made Birmingham his home with his conservative wife Rizwana and their two children, Saira, 17 and Asif, 14. He indulges their interests in all things English and Western but now finds himself increasingly nostalgic about his roots. Saira, with a year to complete her graduation, is excited at the prospect of going to university to pursue her interest in Literature. She also hopes that this will give her more time to spend with David, her aspiring writer boyfriend. At this critical juncture in her life, Nazir finds himself feeling increasingly conflicted at the thought of his daughter going out into the big bad world. His fears are further strengthened by the arrival of his older brother Riyaaz from India. A staunch traditional man, Riyaaz arrives with a proposal of marriage for Saira. A man of his word, who takes great pride in his roots, Riyaaz doesn’t intend on taking a ‘no’ for an answer. With the threat of an illicit relationship looming over his head and the prospect of getting cut off from the rest of his family, Nazir finds himself at the brink of a terrible decision to make: Should he save face? Or save his daughter?

Bombay Beach is one of the poorest communities in southern California located on the shores of the Salton Sea, a man-made sea stranded in the middle of the Colorado desert that was once a beautiful vacation destination for the privileged and is now a pool of dead fish. Film director Alma Har’el tells the story of three protagonists. The trials of Benny Parrish, a young boy diagnosed with bipolar disorder whose troubled soul and vivid imagination create both suffering and joy for him and his complex and loving family. The story of CeeJay Thompson, a black teenager and aspiring football player who has taken refuge in Bombay Beach hoping to avoid the same fate of his cousin who was murdered by a gang of youths in Los Angeles; and that of Red, an ancient survivor, once an oil field worker, living on the fumes of whiskey, cigarettes and an irrepressible love of life. Together these portraits form a triptych of manhood in its various ages and guises, in a gently hypnotic style that questions whether they are a product of their world or if their world is a construct of their own imaginations.

In 1962 budding young photographer David Bailey gets a fifteen guinea contract working for ‘Vogue’ magazine. For his first shoot,an Acrylan advert,he picks inexperienced teenage model Jean Shrimpton,who has left home to escape a bullying father and moves in with Bailey,despite his having a wife. When the magazine launches its Young Ideas feature,to capture a youth readership, Bailey and Jean are sent on a photo shoot to New York with the magazine’s fashion editor Lady Clare Rendlesham. Lady Clare is incensed when Bailey defies her orders and shoots impressively unorthodox photos of his nervous muse,demanding his removal from the magazine. Vogue editor Ailsa Garland,however,recognises the innovative nature of Bailey’s work and over-rules Lady Clare,giving rise to one of the most famous partnerships of the Swinging Sixties.

Set in the 1930s Arab states at the dawn of the oil boom, the story centers on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law.

After losing his family when he was young, Nam-soon feels no pain. The cook, the farmer, the alter boy, and the head pig keeper give insight into the military terror they were subjected to and their reasons for fleeing. The documentary-style film is a montage of the real fates of young deserters and shows moving moments of traumatic memories and the social ostracism experienced after the war.

The contemporary story of Chinese New Zealand-born over-achiever Emily Chu, raised to believe she can get anything she puts her mind to. Even if ‘anything’ is at odds with her traditional Hong Kong born parents’ wish for her to become a doctor like her two older sisters. Everything is coming up roses – until she meets James, a European New Zealander, and accidentally falls in love with him. But if her father finds out, she will face disownment.
